Chinese Subtitle: 我是法国人,我叫劳伦丝(Laurence),我在这里学中文一年多了。我是从零开始学的,我喜欢学中文。虽然我会说法语、英语、日语和西班牙语、但是中文学习还是充满了挑战,我觉得最难的地方是听力和词序。这个学校的老师教得非常好,教材也很实用、有趣,我很享受在这里的学习,我将来的目标是跟我的同事在吃饭的时候用流利的中文聊天儿。

English Subtitle:I am a French lady and my name is Laurence. I have been here studying Chinese more than one year. I started from zero and I like to study Chinese so much. Although I can speak French, English, and Japanese and Spanish, I feel my Chinese study is still full of challenge. The most difficult part for me is the listening comprehension and Chinese word sequence. The teachers of this school are excellent at their teaching. The course materials are also very practical and interesting. I really enjoy the study here and my future goal is to chat with my colleagues in fluent Chinese when I have meals with them.

2.4 Student Testimonial

I found the Chinese classes very effective in helping my learn the language. I wanted to pick up the Chinese language as it is useful. ChinaLingua School has trial lessons available. I attended one and made up my mind to sign up.

The teachers are very supportive. The classes I had were kept to no more than three to four people so that I could receive personal coaching from native-speaking Chinese teachers. The teachers are very passionate. I have just completed the higher-level beginner courses and now look forward to continue with intermediate courses.

4.3 Course Description

This course is designed particularly for western beginners and local Singaporean Chinese who has an English education background.

This course gives a clear, step-by-step guidance for students to learn to write Chinese characters, start from those which have a few easy strokes to others which have more complicated strokes. Pinyin and English translation are marked with each character so that students are able to remember the meaning and pronunciation while practicing writing and reading. Thus the reading and writing of Chinese characters become enjoyable but not boring.

After several months of study, students can easily recognize and write 2000 Chinese characters, which enable them to write Chinese emails and read the Life forum of Chinese newspapers. They will be able to reach the reading and writing level of primary 6 of Singapore local schools.

The ability to read and write is critical in a language study. If a person can only understand the language through listening and speaking but not able to read and write, he is still considered incompetent. The reason why a student enters a school for a systematic study is to avoid incompetency. Therefore, the reading and writing of Chinese is particularly critical. A person who cannot read or write Chinese can only keep his language competence at the stage of a child of 5-6 years. Thus he is not able to enjoy profoundly the pleasure in Chinese study and interaction.

5.4 Student Testimonial

Chinalingua offered me a highly qualified teacher who was able to entirely meet my linguistic needs while reading different kinds of newspaper and magazine articles on Chinese politics and society. We especially focused on topics published in Singapore’s 联合早报 dealing with China-Singapore relations, about which I had to write a report while working for the Swiss Embassy of Singapore. Not only did the teacher emphasize specific linguistic issues of the Chinese language during class, but we also discussed cultural aspects so typical for Chinese speaking geographical regions. Alltogther, my experience as a student at Chinalingua has turned out to be very positive and has definitely increased my linguistic and cultural understanding of Mandarin.

Course 8 Chinese For Locals

8.1 Course Introduction

This is a course for local students

Pronunciation and intermediate courses

For local English speaking students

8.2 Course Fee and Duration

8.3 Course Description

As Singapore government always focuses on the economic development and interaction with China, local public schools have already started to promote Chinese study. Not only Chinese was prescribed as the obligatory subject for students of Chinese race but Chinese exam is also required for PSLE, O Level and A level. The content of these Chinese courses are quite difficult. As 99% of the school subjects are conducted in English, plus no much Chinese communication environment provided outside of school or in the families, the more students study the harder the contents to be absorbed smoothly, and the less interest student have. Some of them have cultivated a sentiment to be averse to Chinese study.

In view of this situation we open up Chines Leap Progress Class to give special guidance to students with difficulty in learning Chinese as well as students who hate Chinese study.  We try our best to help them study Chinese in an effective way and thus gradually love Chinese and strive for the high marks in the core exams.

Here is the detail of our teaching methods. On the basis of a thorough explanation of school textbook contents, teachers guide students to do large amount of intensive reading while various kinds of exercises. At the same time we play relevant videos to give students a lot of exposure to Chinese language environment, so that they will master the relevant vocabulary and improve their listening ability, while learning Chinese society knowledge through flexible, vivid and pleasant activities.

The articles we select are interesting, thought-provoking with

beautiful language that gives great literary appeal. They not only nestle up students’ daily life but also closely connect with social development. With our senior teachers’ patient guidance and clear specific explanation, our students have enjoyed their Chinese lesson through studying these articles. Now they are motived to study Chinese more actively and they participate in classroom activities more earnestly. Thus their learning ability and Chinese exam results are both greatly improved. Currently students who study at our school have all achieved A or A* result in their PSLE and O level exams.
